General Facilities

  • Work and study space for artists, art historians and related disciplines.
  • Demonstration area for short courses and demonstrations relating to the care of paintings and traditional painting and printmaking techniques.
  • A range of historic printing presses
  • Displays of historic materials and practices relating to painting and printmaking.
  • Large collection of engraved wood blocks, copper etchings and engravings, hand printed impressions from some of the collection may be purchased.

Plate making facilities include

  • Hard and soft ground copper etching
  • Aquatint and Mezzotint
  • Photo etching
  • Direct litho for hand drawn and painted litho plates
  • Photo lithography
  • Steel facing (electro-deposition of iron on copper)

All the above facilities need to be booked in advance and the price will be agreed on application.

  • Star Wheel rolling press for intaglio printing
  • Albion Platten press for wood block and lino cut printing
  • Foot treddle letter press for printing type and blocks
  • Large format electrically operated rolling press to accommodate plates up to 32” X 48”
  • Hunter Penrose litho proofing press
  • De la Rue intaglio proofing press for metal plates and dies.
  • Waite and Saville, plate and die stamping presses ( 4” x 2”, 8”x 3”, 9”x 5”, 13”x 18.5”).
  • Foot treddle metal guillotine
  • Machine shop pillar drill, lathe and work bench
  • Plate preparation sinks
  • Copper engraving tools
  • Wood engraving tools
  • Mezzotint rockers and guides
  • Aquatint box
  • Mezzotint scrapers and burnishers
